There is no ground transportation. There are no operating gasoline stations. Debris is present throughout the island and is actively being collected by the City’s debris management contractor. Also, please be aware of displaced wildlife throughout the island.
Speed limit on the entire island is 20 mph or lower based on conditions.
ATVs, UTVs, side-by-sides, and golf carts that are not legally registered to operate on City streets are prohibited.
Portable toilets have been placed around the island. Please refer to the following map for locations.
CURFEW
A curfew is in effect on Sanibel from 9:00pm – 6:00am. No vehicle, bicycle, or pedestrian movement is permitted except for essential response personnel and emergency contractors. The curfew will be strictly enforced.
POWER RESTORATION
Following are the estimated timelines for power restoration provided by LCEC. The timeframe for power restoration on Sanibel is generally October 31, however, currently there is not a detailed timeline for power restoration at each house and structure. There may be unique situations where power restoration may be delayed.
ELECTRICAL INSPECTION
Inspection and/or repair of electrical equipment that was flooded or damaged by Hurricane Ian is required before the city notifies LCEC power may be restored to the property. Please click this link for more information. Questions may be directed to [email protected]
WATER RESTORATION
The Island Water Association (IWA) has pressurized the water distribution system throughout Sanibel and Captiva islands. The water is not safe for consumption unless brought to a rolling boil for at least one-minute. To reestablish water service at your property you must complete the request form available on the island water association’s website, www.islandwater.com
SEWER RESTORATION
At this time, water must only be used for construction purposes and property clean up until sanitary sewer systems are online. Water must not be used for any purpose that will discharge to the sewer, including toilet flushing, showering, laundry, and hand washing.
TRASH COLLECTION
The city has placed containers at the City Recycling Center to collect residential refrigerator and kitchen rubbish. No commercial rubbish, debris, or vegetation will be accepted. Commercial property owners must contact their waste hauler for pick up as needed.
DEBRIS REMOVAL
Debris removal began October 14 and is ongoing. The City of Sanibel, along with its contracted debris hauler, continue to explore potential sites for temporary storage of debris removed from residential neighborhoods before it can be hauled off the island.
REASSESSEMENT OF PROPERTY
The Army Corps of Engineers are on Sanibel this week to perform reassessment of properties deemed “destroyed” and “major damage” by Urban Search and Rescue teams. Property owners who sustained hurricane damage, may advise the Lee County Property Appraiser about the damage via this hurricane reporting link. You may also directly upload photos and other information here.
RECREATIONAL VEHICLES (RV)
The Sanibel Municipal Code provides recreation vehicles may be used for residential purposes or temporary basis only in a mobile home park.
STORAGE PODS
Storage pods are allowed at single-family homes but only temporarily, for no more than 30 days.
