How to Get to Sanibel

Currently, Sanibel is accessible only by boat. The City of Sanibel has been informed the Sanibel bridge will be accessible for civilian use beginning October 21.

Barge Access

Contractors who have access to a barge may bring equipment to Sanibel to help their customers with mitigation efforts. A Commercial Hurricane Reentry Pass is required. Barge landing locations include Tarpon Bay Marina and Sanibel Marina. All contractors who wish to land at one of those locations must coordinate their arrival/departure times with the Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce. For more information, please click this link

Curfew

A curfew remains in effect on Sanibel from 7:00 pm – 7:00 am, without exception. Persons must not be on the streets during curfew hours. The curfew will be strictly enforced.

Swim Advisory

The Florida Department of Health in Lee County (DOH-Lee) has issued a county-wide precautionary swim advisory for all public beaches and swimming pools and urges the public to not enter the water due to the possible increase of waterborne illnesses. Water quality has been affected by Hurricane Ian and at this time, swimming is not recommended. Please click this link for more information.

Power Restoration

Following are the estimated timelines for power restoration provided by LCEC. Inspection and/or repair of electrical equipment that was flooded or damaged by Hurricane Ian is required before the city notifies LCEC power may be restored to the property.

Water Restoration

The Island Water Association (IWA) has pressurized the water distribution system throughout Sanibel and Captiva islands. The water is not safe for consumption unless brought to a rolling boil for at least one-minute. To reestablish water service at your property you must complete the request form available on the island water association’s website, www.islandwater.com

Sewer Restoration

At this time, water must only be used for construction purposes and property clean up until sanitary sewer systems are online. Water must not be used for any purpose that will discharge to the sewer, including toilet flushing, showering, laundry, and hand washing.

Trash Collection

The city has placed containers at the City Recycling Center to collect residential refrigerator and kitchen rubbish. No commercial rubbish, debris, or vegetation will be accepted. Commercial property owners must contact their waste hauler for pick up as needed.

Permit Requirements

The City of Sanibel recognizes the need of residents and their contractors to start mitigating damage quickly, efficiently, and safely. While a building permit is required for most construction-related work, various improvements of real property may not require a building permit. Please click this link for more information about construction-related work and various improvements of real property that may not require a building permit.

Need A Tarp?

Operation Blue Roof is active in Lee County. The Deadline to apply is October 23. This is a FREE, NO COST program; a contractor will install a fiber-reinforced, industrial-strength sheeting to protect a storm-damaged roof until a homeowner can make permanent repairs. Sign-up by calling 888-766-3258; visit Operation Blue Roof; or go to a mobile sign-up location.

Debris Hauling

Sanibel residents are asked to place storm-generated debris on the public right-of-way. Only loose debris will be collected, bagged debris should not be placed on the public right-of-way. To prevent flat tires, residents are asked to collect and dispose of any nails and screws found in front of residences. For more information, please click this link.

Reassessment of Property

The Army Corps of Engineers will be on Sanibel this week to perform a reassessment of properties deemed “destroyed” and “major damage” by Urban Search and Rescue teams.

FEMA Floodplain Maps

The City of Sanibel’s floodplain management regulations and codes specify the lowest habitable floor of all new buildings must be elevated to or above the base flood elevation (BFE) established by FEMA in the Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) plus one foot. The regulations also specify “substantial improvement” of existing buildings or buildings that have sustained “substantial damage” (as these terms are defined in the Sanibel Code) must be brought into compliance with the requirements for new construction. The City is providing a GIS map to assist homeowners in reviewing the updated FEMA FIRM that will become effective November 17, 2022.
